Live Blog #2: "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street"

Today we are live-blogging and and looking at your thesis statements again. Your task is divided into two stages:

1: After you log in, type your thesis statement in to the comments section, just as you did before.

2. Constructively comment on someone else's thesis statement, using only that person's display name. Try to include a positive, as well as a recommendation.

  4. By being in a crowd, an individual is most likely to not act upon his/her own beliefs, but rather act upon others' ideas.

  5. Being in crowds changes the way people behave by allowing one to believe that they are the alpha or leader, making one feel that they need to find an enemy within the group.

  6. Being in a crowd changes the way people behave in that they single others out, regardless of any previous relationships and friendships, in order to save themselves.

  7. When an individual is placed in a crowd he/she takes on the characteristics and emotions of the people because they are influenced and pressured to conform to the environment.

  8. Being in a crowd changes the way people behave in that, as numbers grow people begin to feel the strength that comes in numbers, as well as the need to find a common enemy, and to take any focus off of yourself in that search, even at the expense of others.

  9. @MareNostrum I really like your thesis i found it very clear and I thought it was pretty good. I think it just needs to be a little bit more descriptive.

  10. Marie Hope: I like the topic of being in a crowd, and how it can affect behavior. I'm a bit unclear on the second part; explaining how this mob mentality operates could strengthen thesis.

  11. After an opinion is incepted into a crowd, the number of people who conform with such opinion increases exponentially, as their fear of denying the growing majority of the crowd increases exponentially.

  12. Being in a crowd changes the way that people behave as people collect and choose sides rather than deciding to stand alone.

  13. Marie Hope:
Your thesis statement was specific and straight to the point which means that you have a good focus. To make your thesis even better you can explain the emotions and how the people in the crowd are influenced so that your thesis can be even more specific

  14. The main theme in the episode "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," is that people are prejudice in order to protect themselves. This is exemplified when each member of the neighborhood discriminates against another member so that he or she is no longer suspected of being a threat.

  15. It is showed in the movie The Monster Are Due on Maple Street that, Fear can cause the existence of human nature behavior occur even when people have spend time living in the same crowd for a long time.

  16. Being in a crowd changes the way people behave as a result from the manipulation that occurs from the large group, and also how it change ones actions in an environment.

  17. dinosaurs810: Great thesis! It is short and to the point. Maybe you could elaborate a little more on how it "saves themselves."

  18. The show criticizes human beings and human nature because it shows how selfish and willing people are to blame one another if it means lives are threatened in any way.

  19. The monsters are due on maple street show how fear destroys a society as everyone is quick to point fingers at someone else so they won't be accused themselves.

  20. crazygoat- I like the idea of succumbing to a mob and acquiring new feelings based on that, but your thesis is a little wordy. I think you should pick between influenced and pressured, because there may be too many ideas. Also, watch for pronoun agreement.

  21. jujube: I like the idea of groups causing singling out of certain individuals but I do not see a direct link between making out an individual to be the enemy because there is a leader.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @ Jujube: You have a good idea about people's instincts in a crowd, however it needs more clarification since you have two topics. I would suggest that you choose one, either how one thinks that he/she is the leader or people try to find a common enemy, and then prove your new thesis.

  23. Being in a crowd changes the way people behave because one persons thoughts can influence the entire groups ideals, turning a couple of people into a powerful mob.

  24. Fear impinges the residents of Maple Street when they believe that extraterrestrial beings have invaded their neighborhood and are responsible for the many bizarre events. This episode of the Twilight Zone depicts and criticizes the hysteria that ensues when one cannot explain a phenomena, for the residents as a mob begin to single out and beset one individual.

I like that your going right to the point. However try to explain more about their ideals.

  26. Being in a crowd changes the way people behave by allowing them to feel the strength as the number of people increases and by being easily influenced by the group making people to focus on finding a common enemy.

  27. The monsters are due on maple street is criticizing human nature not the lives of Americans.when a problem. arises the instintual act of self-preservation causes us to look for someone to blame because if we dont we will be targeted or associated with the problem. Once the enemy has been identified we place our fears, concerns, and doubts can be projected onto someone else so that we feel better

  28. MareNostrum: Good ideas but what/why/how do people conform and attack individualism? What is it about the group mentality? (Note: please post under correct class.)

googleblog-collins: A lot of pretty good ideas here, but thesis is a bit long and bulky. A more straightforward cause=effect thesis could be better. Watch comma use, rep.

SpringSkies: Very detailed, descriptive thesis, but a little top-heavy with ideas. Not sure about "exponentially."

catdog78: Good idea - prejudice as defense mechanism, but unclear on final sentence. Is the discriminated-against person no longer a threat? If not, you need to rewrite.

  29. In "The Monsters are due on Maple Street, it is conveyed that in the face of adversity, a group of people will turn against each other rather than band together.

  30. omamba: Good topics, but how are humans criticized? Does it show how readily people will condemn others if they feel threatened? If so, we're talking about a survival instinct.

dog: It sounds like you're talking about fear as the catalyst for man's inhumanity to man. Focus and develop. Watch grammar, sent. structure, pas voice.

spencer on the go: Not bad. Solid. clear thesis. What happens to the people that point those fingers? Perhaps you could extend your thesis a bit.

Hello: Good thoughts. I'm wondering why, exactly, one person's thoughts can affect an entire group's ideas? What is the circumstance, the context? Need apostrophes.

cheese7412: I gravitate toward the "unexplained phenomena." Do we construct our own answers when none works? Is this dangerous?

Monkey: Great thoughts - I like the idea of the double-sided nature of mob mentality. It strengthens the individual while cutting down his individuality. Watch syntax, sent. structure.

  31. Tick's Toys: A good analysis of fear and its effect on the individual within a crowd. Go a bit deeper - how does this fear operate? Is there a warning here? What is it? Your thesis is a bit of a run-on. Watch grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.

jpod: Why do they turn against each other? What is the circumstance? After all, there are plenty of exceptions to what you said. Go a bit deeper. Explain.

  32. Being in a crowd of people can result in certain individuals standing out, which will inevitably lead to the rest of the people finding a reason to turn against them in their desperate search to find a common enemy, as shown in "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street."

  33. mtylerk1995: It's definitely a thesis but one with a very specific scenario. You've sort of described the show's plot, cloaked in the form of a thesis statement. Back up a bit. How/why do certain people stand out? Why will the others necessarily turn against him or her? Wouldn't they follow that person? If not, is there a reason they don't? Just a bit confused on where you're going with this.

  34. number16: How/why does a large group manipulate the individual? Explain this, illustrating with examples. Possessive apostrophes.
